Creating places that are welcoming, open, inviting, and inclusive is an essential part of helping people to feel they can build relationships and join or start new communities. Designing places that support a sense of belonging is perhaps one of the most important ways in which architects and urban designers can help people to grow and thrive.
There are a number of essential design characteristics that can nurture community, and at Open Architecture Studio we aim to include these in every project we design. These include shared spaces that are inviting and attractive; an absence of real or perceived barriers; clear lines of vision and casual surveillance to reduce safety concerns; sheltered, comfortable and shaded public spaces that make active transport appealing.
