Michael Bailey


As the founder and director of Open Architecture Studio, Michael has focused on establishing a dynamic design studio made up of energetic and passionate designers that together have a rich and varied expertise in community-centric projects.


The focus on community projects is driven by Michael’s passion for his local community and belief that well designed public places play a critical role in supporting connected, healthy and active communities.


Michael combines his keen design sensibility with a strong technical background, and and prides himself in his clear communication and calm approach to solving  design challenges. He has led a number of award-winning public projects while working as an associate for with Cox Architecture and as part of large teams with Donovan Hill, both of which are highly regarded Australian practices. These projects include the Sir Samuel Griffith Centre, the James Cook University Townsville Campus Master Plan and the National Maritime Museum of China among others.

Chapman Leijenaar

Senior Collaborator

Chapman is a Queensland registered architect with nearly two decades of professional experience. An insatiable quest for exceptional design has earned him the role of senior design architect with a number of reputable practices, leading design teams to successfully deliver meaningful and value-add results that exceeds client expectations.

Chapman has extensive experience in a wide range of building typologies including corporate, commercial, residential, educational, sports-leisure and hospitality, as well as marine interiors and exterior styling. He believes that individual buildings should connect to its immediate and greater urban environment, and will always look for ways in which the building can contribute to its community by celebrating the function through its simple and logical form and by revealing the inner workings to the casual passer-by to inviting interest and engagement.

Heinrich Olckers

Architectural Graduate

Heinrich is a creative architect with over seven years post-graduate experience. He is registered in South Africa, and is not only passionate about design but has developed strong project management and documentation skills. Heinrich is skilled with Revit and AutoCAD and possess excellent client relation skills.

Daia de Brito

Architectural Graduate

Daia is a talented graduate with five years post-graduate experience. She has worked and studied in Spain, Australia and the Czech Republic, where she completed her degree. Daia has a passion for architectural and interior design, and enjoys translating abstract architectural photography into bold fabric patterns and motifs.

Suzy Syme

Architectural Graduate

Suzy is a talented graduate in her first year out since graduating from the University of Queensland in 2018. Suzy loves all 3D software and creating complex geometry, and is a master of Revit, Rhino and Lumion. Her love of complex 3D software and problem solving is equally matched by a love of fine art - she grew up drawing, painting, making jewellery and clothes, and even spent a year studying at the Queensland College of Art.

Marissa Wathen

Senior Collaborator

Marissa has 12 years of experience working on a range of commercial buildings, public art projects, aquatic centres and foreshore master plans in Australia. Marissa is interested in resolving complex planning issues at all scales and is an expert in delivering quality documentation with a variety of 3D packages.

Marissa is a senior collaborative partner with Open Architecture Studio and is leading the implementation of strong documentation and 3D modelling standards across the studio. Prior to working with Open Architecture Studio, Marissa worked for five years as a senior designer with Liquid Blu, a highly respected master planning and commercial design practice based in Brisbane.
