Humpybong Plaza
New community heart for gathering and celebration
Location Redcliffe QLD (Kabi Kabi Country)
Project Type Tourism
At the heart of our approach to placemaking is a simple belief — that great public spaces are shaped by people, experience and identity. The Humpybong Plaza vision for Redcliffe is exactly that: a proposal that transforms an underutilised public carpark into a landscaped civic heart, activating the space through flexible programming, fine-grain urban design, and a deep understanding of what this community needs and values.
The project reimagines the area as a gathering place for markets, events, dining, and daily social interaction, allowing the creek to breathe again and bring new life to the heart of the CBD. By replacing surface car parks with open civic space, the creek is freed to flow to the ocean, reducing local flooding while creating a more generous and welcoming public realm.
Parking is relocated to a nearby multi-storey structure, while enhanced active transport networks — cycling and walking paths, e-scooter facilities, and an electric loop bus — reduce parking demand and improve accessibility across the peninsula. Integrated retail, café tenancies, and community event facilities activate the plaza's edges, creating continuous frontages that provide natural surveillance and a sense of safety.
The design celebrates food-sharing, gathering and celebration as fundamental to community life across all cultures — recognising that when a place is designed with identity and belonging at its core, it becomes somewhere people choose to be. Quality public realm acts as a catalyst, attracting private investment and triggering broader economic activity as Redcliffe transitions from suburban service centre to mature urban destination.
