Humpybong Plaza
New community heart for gathering and celebration
Location Redcliffe QLD (Kabi Kabi Country)
Project Type Tourism
This vision for a central plaza in Redcliffe transforms the Humpybong public carpark into a landscaped civic plaza—creating a new community heart for the peninsula. The project reimagines the area as a gathering place for markets, events, dining, and daily social interaction, allowing the creek to breathe again and bring new life to the heart of the CBD.
The proposed plaza replaces existing surface car parks with open civic space, allowing the creek to flow freely into the ocean and preventing flooding of the local area. The parking spaces would be relocated to a multi-story paid parking structure nearby, while enhanced active transport networks—including cycling and walking paths, e-scooter facilities, and an electric loop bus serving the peninsula—reduce parking demand and improve accessibility from the rest of the peninsula.
Integrated retail, cafe tenancies, and facilities for community events and celebrations activates the plaza, creating active edges through continuous frontages to provide natural surveillance and improve community safety. The plaza accommodates diverse activities from daily dining to festivals, recognising food-sharing and celebration as fundamental to community building across all cultures.
Quality public realm acts as a catalyst, attracting private investment that triggers larger-scale development and additional economic activity. The design responds to Redcliffe's transition from suburban service centre to mature urban destination, providing essential public gathering spaces as density increases.
