Project Type Sport & Recreation
The new Sporting Wheelies para-hub gives children with a disability the opportunity to experience a variety of para-sports as part of their rehabilitation journey — and to pursue a path all the way to representing Australia as a future Paralympian. At its heart, it is a community hub where children feel included and see genuine representation of people with a disability.
Our approach to this project goes beyond compliance. Universal design — where all people can participate fully — shaped every decision, informed by co-design with people with lived experience of disability and the diverse communities the facility will serve. The result is a precinct that is not just accessible, but genuinely welcoming.
The redevelopment of the former Balmoral Bowls Club, leased from Brisbane City Council by Sporting Wheelies, will accommodate various activities, including:
• Multipurpose Courts
• Rehabilitation Gym
• Community Function Spaces & Café
• Skate Bowl & Skate Rink
• Wheelchair maintenance and repair
The building is designed as a community clubhouse that can flex across a variety of uses. The ends of the building form the main program spaces — rehabilitation, allied health, and community function and meeting rooms — all linked by a central entry foyer and café that forms the heart of the building. These community spaces bring further life to the site and allow the broader community to embrace the future of para-sports in Brisbane.
This precinct will be a vibrant, inspirational home that supports young para-athletes and their families through both intensive sporting activity and the wraparound services that make a real difference.
Master Plan developed in conjunction with Arcadia.
