Camp Kitchens

Sustainability and beauty at council-owned campsites

Location Toowoomba, QLD (Jarowair/Barunggam Country)
Client Western Downs Regional Council
Value $330,000
Status One complete, two under construction
Project Type Tourism & Culture

Open Architecture Studio was engaged by lead consultants Green Edge Design to design and document three camp kitchens across Western Downs Council’s RV Parks at Chinchilla Weir, Caliguel Lagoons and Lake Broadwater.

Open's sculptural designs respond to the natural beauty of the individual sites, creating memorable landmarks within each campground. Folded and perforated weathered steel in earthy colours features patterning inspired by local flora. The shelters are orientated to views and create a beautiful space for communal gathering, protected from the elements yet immersed in the landscape.

Project benefits

Sustainable materials and reduced impact to the site were central to Open's design. Materials are natural and locally sourced, algorithmic modelling reduces waste, and the design minimises the time and impact of the construction on site. The unique, functional shelters will deliver value to the Council by attracting campers and providing many years of enjoyment whilst minimising maintenance.
